Impact Youth Mentoring: Matches at-risk youth with positive adult mentors.

Impact Youth Mentoring is a service provided by Youth Emergency Services, Inc. (Y.E.S. House) which matches at-risk children in the community with positive adult mentors. Mentors come from all ages, cultures and interest groups. Children are asked to complete an application process and interest inventory. The adult mentors are also asked to complete an application, a thorough screening, interviewing, and training process before they are matched with a child. Mentors are asked to commit a minimum of one hour per week with the child they are mentoring. The Y.E.S. House performs routine follow-up evaluations on every mentor match that is made. Ongoing support is provided by our Mentorship Coordinator and other support staff.

Does Mentoring Work?

In a study of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, it was shown that young people with mentors were:

  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol

  • 53% less likely to skip school

  • 37% less likely to skip a class

  • 33% less likely to hit someone

  • than children in the research control group.

In a Lou Harris Poll:

  • 73% of students said their mentors helped raise their goals and expectations

  • 59% of the mentored students improved their grades
